Violence remains major problem for healthcare professionals

As Turkey marks Medicine Day today, representatives of nongovernmental health organizations say that violence is the biggest problem facing medical staff in the country.

Medicine Day offers an opportunity to talk about the problems and working conditions of health personnel generally come to public attention and are discussed in the country. Medicine Day has been celebrated every year since March 14, 1827, when the first modern school of medicine was opened under Sultan Mahmut II. When asked by Today's Zaman what the biggest problems facing healthcare personnel were in Turkey, representatives of nongovernmental organizations fighting for the rights of medical personnel pointed to violence.

Active Health Services Personnel and Social Service Workers Union (Aktif Sağlık-Sen) Chairman Hüseyin Ayhan, who also spoke with Today's Zaman, said the Health Ministry has to work in cooperation with nongovernmental organizations and healthcare professionals when taking measures against violence targeting medical staff. Ayhan shared the results of a survey which was conducted by the union in 2012 but which has not yet been released. Although the number of those who report having suffered from violence in this survey is lower, it nevertheless found that 44 percent of respondents said they have been exposed to physical violence at least once in their careers. The survey was conducted with 2,800 healthcare professionals from all 81 Turkish provinces in 2012.

Regarding the major possible reasons why patients or relatives of patients resort to violence against members of staff, Ayhan stated that the primary reasons found in the survey are dissatisfaction with treatment, feeling neglected, inadequacies of healthcare institutions, ineffective health policies, selfishness and a lack of respect, the high number of patients, staff shortages, safety deficiencies and alcohol and drug abuse.

“The group of workers which is exposed to violence most in healthcare is nurses. When asked which occupational groups in the healthcare industry are subject to violence in Turkey, 1,911 participants answered that they believe nurses are a more frequent target for aggressive patient families while only 859 people said doctors are exposed to violence,” Ayhan noted.
